Narelle Underwood, our Surveyor General and Director Survey Operations for Spatial Services was announced as a joint winner of the Emerging Leader in the Government or Public Sector category of the Women’s Agenda Leadership Awards on 13 September 2019.

Narelle is Australia’s first female Surveyor General and the youngest in over 200 years and has been a trailblazer in the surveying profession since beginning in the field over 15 years ago. As Surveyor General, Narelle is responsible for leadership in surveying, mapping and the maintenance of geographic information.

Coming to the department from Roads and Maritime Services, where she actively promoted surveying as a critical activity with potential for impact on the delivery of large transport infrastructure projects, Narelle’s passion for her chosen field has seen her play a key advocacy role in the geospatial industry in NSW.

As the President of the Board of Surveying and Spatial Information (BOSSI), Chair of the Geographical Names Board and as NSW representative on the Intergovernmental Committee for Surveying & Mapping (ICSM) her rigour and integrity have also set a benchmark for the industry across the country.
